“Onikle” is a brand-new preprint searching platform, but you might wonder “what is so different from conventional platform such as arXiv?” This blog will discuss the functions that makes Onikle a revolution in preprint platform or science world in general.

UI/UX

First let’s take a look at the main page of arXiv where most computer scientists look for leads in their AI research:

This UI/UX is extremely old, where not much has changed from early 2000’s creating needless pain for researchers before their actual work. According to our survey, a researcher wastes around 1200 hours on research which is the exactly the same amount as the time it takes complete a research according to Japanese Government. Onikle provides a simple and easy-to-guide platform where clutter of words does not exist, providing a stress-free experience:

Portfolio

Uploader of preprints in current open-access repository such as arXiv does not have simple way to see how the posted paper is fairing in the platform through metrics such as views, citation, or amount of clicks it gained. Onikle will provide such information to the end user in the Portfolio function so they can understand which paper is doing well and alter their future preprints according to the findings. This exposure of metrics will provide new dimension to preprints: as of now, people cannot visualize the contribution of preprint to a science world, so people tend to publish in journals with high Impact Factor to gain the acknowledgement of contribution. With portfolio function it will visualize the contribution of a preprint therefore a researcher does not have to go through the unfair process of a journal.

Issue

One of the most criticized point of preprint is that by definition it is not peer-reviewed thus it lacks reliability. (We have talked about how peer-review is not credible as much as people might believe so in this blog: ) Onikle believes the demerit of preprint can be solved by having Issue function. Issue function will let users start discussion on preprint on the same platform so people can discuss questions you have, reproducibility of paper, datas, and bugs etc., with other researchers. This will create a democratic “peer-review” system where people have full understanding on why a paper is “good” or “bad” and not based on black box of journals.

Recommend

One other reason why researcher end up using more than 1200 hours only for research is because current platforms do not provide latest update on individual fields of interest for the researcher. As of now, researchers create RSS, which is hard in itself, or try to follow trends on SNS like the twitter. Both methods are not efficient way of collecting desired information. Onikle will provide Recommend function in which users will be provided with optimal papers based on the bookmarks they make with specially designed AI. This will relieve the hassle and stress of continuously searching for the same thing and provide researchers quick access to desirable papers.

Onikle believes in the day and age of modern information society, Open Science must become the standard to disrupt Traditional Research Industry. Onikle hopes to utilise technology to open up the locked science community. Developers of Onikle always supports the activities of researchers.
